FAQs
Mr Zev Freilich – Baby Circumcisions North East
-
Is there any difference between Muslim African or Jewish circumcision?
There is no difference at all in the way the circumcision is done.
What is a circumcision?
The surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis, (the foreskin is the hollow sleeve of skin at the end of the penis which covers the glans and corona). It is one of the most common surgical procedures as well as one of the oldest.
What items will I need to get for the circumcision?
No shopping necessary, we will provide you all you need.
How do you do the circumcision?
Prior to the circumcision we apply a topical local anaesthetic to the area. We isolate the foreskin away from the penis below it, and safely and quickly remove it with a scalpel and apply a quickclotTM bandage in a matter of seconds. Using this technique allows us to remove this bandage after a few minutes which is far superior level of comfort and ease for the baby than any other method. Hence, the healing process can begin straight away.
We do not use stitches, ring or plastibell. This reduces risks of infection and other complications.
-
How long does the procedure take?
The actual procedure is very quick – usually a minute or two.
-
Do you use anaesthetic?
Yes – a topical anaesthetic is used to numb the area. Although on very young children this is often superfluous.
-
How long does it take to heal?
Since the dressing is removed after only a few minutes, the healing starts immediately, taking 7-10 days to heal fully – and normally no longer than 2 weeks.
-
Will my baby be in pain afterwards?
Often the baby is back to normal by the time you leave. If your baby is a little more irritable over the next few hours this generally settles pretty quickly. He has double nappies on to give him extra padding, and to help keep his legs apart, don’t be afraid to handle him – it won’t hurt. In all other respects try to keep his routine as normal as possible.
-
How do I take care of my baby following the circumcision?
As normal, by changing him regularly the only difference is that you will need to put Vaseline on him. We will show you how to do this and We will give you written aftercare instructions to refer too. Additionally, following the circumcision you can call at any time for any questions or aftercare advice, so you are never on your own!
-
At what age should the circumcision be done?
Provided the baby is healthy, the best age is from 1 week to 1 month old. At this age he feels less, he is less aware & the healing is much faster. Although circumcision can be done at any age, you should try to get it done within the first month.
-
Can I get my baby circumcised by the NHS at no cost?
The National Health Service (NHS) only provides circumcisions where there is a specific medical/therapeutic need. If you are looking to get your baby circumcised for any other reason it is chargeable. The convenient, reliable and reasonably priced option, is to get the circumcision performed by the specialist surgeons of the Initiation Society, who are trained to the highest medical standards.
For an appointment call us on 0191 917 4489, or fill out the contact form HERE.
-
Are there any risks involved in a circumcision?
The procedure is usually straightforward with no complications, occasionally bleeding may develop later, (less than 1 in 200 cases). This is usually easily controlled by redressing the wound and can be detected by checking the baby regularly in the hours following the circumcision. We will check the baby before you go home. Infection following the circumcision is very rare (less then one in five hundred cases).
-
Should I choose a home visit?
This is something that you can choose. A home visit is the ultimate in comfort and convenience. There is nothing like the comfort of your own home for the wellbeing of you and your newborn! You have your privacy and the baby is in his familiar surroundings with no queues or crowds. We will ensure that the sterility of the entire area that we use in the home.
-
What is the advantage of using a member of the Initiation Society?
Choosing a member of The Initiation Society gives you peace of mind that your baby is in the good hands of a well-trained, (fully insured) circumcision specialist. The Initiation Society. (founded in 1745) is the only body in the UK that regulates and supervises surgeons for circumcision, employing rigorous training and oversight to ensure that the highest standards in technique and hygiene are maintained.
-
What is the current medical guidance about circumcision?
Circumcision is a great way to protect your baby son throughout his life. In the United States, the national health guidelines were updated by The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in December 2014, concluding that the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. The many medical benefits include the reduction of the risk of developing unpleasant and serious illnesses: See this link; (https://www.yahoo.com/health/circumcision-benefits-outweigh-risks-cdc-says-104161436012.html).

AFTERCARE FAQ’S: How do I take care of my baby following the circumcision?
As normal, by changing him regularly. The only difference is that you need to put Vaseline on him which we provide in the aftercare pack. We will show you how to do this and will provide written aftercare instructions for you to refer to. I am also on call for the first 24 hours for any questions or advice so you are not on your own.
-
What after-care information will I recieve?
We will provide a pack that includes all of my contact details, a leaflet on how to care for
your baby and if you have any other questions, you will have access to our 24-hour
emergency line and you can always come in for a follow-up all included in the cost. -
Why babys’ penis is yellow and white, is it infected?
No. The layer of skin, underneath the glans (mucous membrane) normally swells up after circumcision. That is the normal part of the healing process. Occasionally this swelling will linger, if that happens that is due to rubbing against the nappy. Keep changing often and make sure the nappies are large enough. (See the Nappy size chart on the notes we provided.)

What is Bris Mila?
Mazal Tov for your new baby boy!
Assuming your baby is in good health then he should have his Bris Mila done on the 8th day from birth. So you should get in touch with a qualified Mohel as soon as possible after birth.
Bris Mila, is made of two words. Bris means covenant and Mila means circumcision, as through the Mila (circumcision) the child enters the covenant (Bris) between G-d and Jewish people.
The practice of Bris Mila has been cherished by Jews through out the generations, and celebrated publicly as a sign of our commitment to be Jewish. The Tur (Medieval Halachic Sefer) writes that it is the greatest of all the Mitzvos (commandments) in the Torah.
Rabbi Zev Freilich is an experienced Mohel (with over 1300 Milas to date) and he will be delighted to assist you in giving your baby his Bris Mila. Rabbi Zev Freilich is registered with the Initiation Society of the UK and is authorised to practice Bris Mila by the Chief Rabbi.
Your Babys Bris Mila will be in accordance with Halocha (Orthodox Jewish practice) and for optimum safety is performed using single use sterile instruments.
